Summer Health Tips for Seniors

Some of the perks of Independent Living in Florida are the freedom from cold winters and the endless options for outdoor activities. The trade-off is the hot summer weather, which can be dangerous for everyone, but especially older adults. You can still enjoy your summers while taking care of your health. Follow these summer health tips for seniors to help you live your best life this summer.
‍

Limit Your Sun Exposure

Atlantic Beach offers plenty of sunny days that are perfect for splashing in the waves and getting outdoors. However, too much sun exposure may cause health issues. Limiting sun exposure can prevent problems such as heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and sun poisoning. Staying out of the sun can also help you stay hydrated. Signs that you're overheated or have had too much sun include:

  • Skin redness and blistering
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness or disorientation
  • Cramping muscles
  • Heat rash
  • Cold, clammy skin
  • High body temperature
  • Fainting
  • Faster or slower pulse
  • No sweating

Moving to air conditioning and drinking water can help if you're mildly overheated. Taking a cool shower or sitting in front of a fan can also help. If your body temperature rises, you're confused, your pulse changes, or you have other serious symptoms, seek medical attention quickly. Fleet Landing’s onsite clinic is available to Residents and provides a safe and effective way to access coordinated, timely care.
‍

Stay Hydrated

Keeping your body hydrated year-round helps all your systems work properly, from your brain to your joints. Hydration is also an important part of regulating your body temperature, which is especially important in the summer. Plus, spending time in the heat and humidity increases sweating, which speeds up water loss.

Water is one of the best beverages for staying hydrated. For Residents at Fleet Landing, we offer several hydration stations throughout the community with infused water to make hydration easy and delicious. Beverages with electrolytes, such as sports drinks, can also help hydrate you quickly.

Your diet can also help with your summer hydration needs. Many fruits and vegetables have lots of water in them which increases hydration.  Options to consider include melons, strawberries, leafy greens, tomatoes, green peppers, and cucumbers. If you're a Resident that's out and about in Fleet Landing, stop by Currents Marketplace for Hyppo Gourmet Ice Pops, which feature fresh fruit, herbs, and spices, for a tasty way to hydrate.
‍

Keep Your Cool

Staying in air-conditioned spaces, especially during the hottest parts of the day, can protect you from heat-related illnesses. The cooled air and humidity control that comes with AC helps regulate your body temperature. Meet up with other Residents in the many air-conditioned spaces at Fleet Landing to beat the summer heat. If you want a change of scenery from your Independent Living community, visit air-conditioned attractions, such as museums, theater performances, and shops. If you choose outdoor summer activities, check the weather and time them for cooler parts of the day.
‍

Plan Safe, Healthy Activities

With the beach just blocks away, it's tempting to spend your days outside. However, sticking with cool, safe activities on the hottest Florida days can help keep you feeling your best. As a luxury senior living community in Florida, Fleet Landing offers a wide range of on-site amenities to keep you cool and entertained. Our Residents enjoy these options:
